Why should I get my horse’s teeth checked?

Your horse’s teeth continue to grow as they get older. They get worn down as they chew, so this constant growth makes sure that there is replacement, but this replacement can be uneven. Hooks and sharp edges can develop which makes it painful or difficult to chew. This can lead to your horse losing weight if they don’t get enough nutrition from the feed you’re giving them. It can also lead to behavioural issues if your horse is in pain. A visit to the dentist is perhaps more important for your horse than for you.

What should I look for in an equine dentist?

Look for a dentist with a good reputation and qualifications. If your dentist can give you a report at the end of the exam of your horses mouth and the work they’ve done, this is a good sign that they are confident in what they have done. These dental charts can also be very handy to have when you come to sell your horse as proof that you have cared for your horse well, and to keep a record of what’s been done.

Your dentist should give you a recommendation on what they would next want to see your horse depending on what they’ve found. Like all of the other health practitioners you may use (farriers, physiotherapists), it’s best to have one who is a partner and understands your horses and what you are wanting to do with them.

If you’ve got any concerns or questions about your horse’s behaviour does the dentist listen and understand if there is anything in the mouth which might be contributing to this?

How often should I get my horse’s teeth checked?

Regularly is the simple answer. The SPCA in Australia recommend every six months for horses aged 2-5, and at least annually after that. If your horse is being fed high amounts of concentrates they recommend that the checks are more frequent.
